General Pet Care Information for Dogs

Spay (Ovariohysterectomy) Purpose: Prevents ovarian cancer, mammory tumors (if the cat is spayed before its first heat), unwanted pregnancies, heat cycles, pyometra (uterus pus), metritis, uterine inflammation, and congenital abnormalities. Best Age: 6 months and before first heat. You cannot spay during the heat cycle or 6-8 weeks after giving birth (until puppies are weaned). Complications: Hemorrhage, shock from blood loss. Futher complications are possible if the cat is older, pregnant, obese, or in the estrus stage. Discharge Instructions: Discharge Instructions: Check incision daily for redness, swelling, discharge or odor. Dogs should be least active during the first 7-10 days after surgery. Increased activity can cause complications.
Neuter (Orchiectomy) Purpose: Prevents aggression, unwanted bleeding, wandering, prostatisis, testicular tumors, brucellosis (sexually transmitted diseases passed between breeding dogs). Best Age: 6-9 Months Discharge Instructions: Check incision daily for redness, swelling, discharge or odor. Dogs should be least active during the first 7-10 days after surgery. Increased activity can cause complications.
Declaw Onychectomy Purpose: Prevents the claws from catching and tearing. Most veterinary hospitals will only remove the hind claws unless the front are loose and troublesome. Best Age: 3-5 days, or at 6 months when spayed or neutered.
