General Pet Care Information for Cats

Common Surgical Procedures

Included in our surgical services are:

  • safe drugs administered according to body weight
  • heat bags
  • intubation
  • monitoring via technician and equipment (pulse oximeter, ECG, blood pressure, esophogeal probe)
  • laser therapy

At Lakeshore Veterinary Clinic we provide the best quality care offered although some surgical procedures may be brief and therefore not all amenities may be used.

Spay (Ovariohysterectomy)

Purpose: Prevents ovarian cancer, mammory tumors (if the cat is spayed before its first heat), unwanted pregnancies, heat cycles, pyometra (uterine infection) , and uterine inflammation.

Best Age: 6 months and before first heat. You cannot spay during the heat cycle or 6-8 weeks after giving birth (until kittens are weaned).

Discharge Instructions: Check incision daily for redness, swelling, discharge or odor. Cats should be least active during the first 7-10 days after surgery. Increased activity can cause complications.

Neuter (Orchiectomy)

Purpose: Prevents spraying (in most but not all cases), odor, aggression (which decreases the chance of cat bite abscesses), and roaming.

Best Age: 6 months.

Discharge Instructions: Check incision daily for redness, swelling, discharge or odor. Cats should be least active during the first 7-10 days after surgery. Increased activity can cause complications.

Declaw (Onychectomy)

Purpose: Remove nail and third phalanx to stop scratching (people, furniture, etc.).

Best Age: 3-6 months depending on the cat.

Discharge Instructions: Check incision daily for redness, swelling, discharge or odor. Cats should be least active during the first 7-10 days after surgery. Increased activity can cause complications.
